Steps

5 steps

Start a payment attempt

A Stripe PaymentIntent represents the payment lifecycle. Your server creates it with details such as the amount and currency.

Attach a payment method

The customer provides payment details using the payment interface. The client uses the intent’s client secret to complete the permitted payment actions.

Confirmation attempts the payment

Confirming the intent starts payment processing. Some payment methods require an additional authentication or customer action.

Observe the changing state

The payment can require more action, continue processing, fail, or succeed. A customer leaving the page does not determine its final state.

The server confirms the outcome

Use server side webhook handling to observe payment completion or failure. Order fulfillment should follow a verified result rather than a client redirect alone.

Scope

An introduction to the PaymentIntent lifecycle, not a complete payment integration. Stripe recommends Checkout Sessions for many new integrations.
